If you have shopped for WordPress themes or plugins outside the official author stores, you have probably seen the letters GPL. They explain why a premium plugin that costs $59 a year from its developer can be offered for a few dollars elsewhere, and why that is perfectly legal. They also explain what you should and shouldn’t expect from a GPL copy.
This guide breaks it down in plain English, so you can decide when a GPL product is the smart choice for your project and when you are better off buying directly from the author.
What is the GPL?
The GNU General Public License (GPL) is an open-source software licence. WordPress itself is released under the GPL, version 2 or later, and that licence travels with the software: anyone who receives GPL code is free to use it, study it, change it and share it, including for a fee.
Because WordPress themes and plugins run inside WordPress and build on its code, the WordPress project’s long-standing position is that their PHP code must be released under the GPL as well. That is why almost every theme and plugin, free or premium, ships with a GPL licence file in its folder.
The GPL covers the code. It does not give anyone rights to the author’s brand, trademarks, support desk or servers.
What you get with a GPL copy
When you buy a GPL theme or plugin from Moryvanta, you receive the same files the author distributes:
- The original, unmodified code for the version listed on the product page.
- Every feature that runs locally on your own site, such as page builders, layouts, widgets, WooCommerce extensions, SEO tools and performance settings.
- Freedom to use it on unlimited websites, including client sites, because the GPL places no limit on installations.
- Newer versions as we add them to the library, which you can download again from your account.
What you don’t get
A GPL copy is the software, not a subscription to the author’s services. Here is what stays with the original developer:
- Official licence keys. Some products show a notice asking you to activate. The core features usually still work, but anything tied to activation will not.
- One-click automatic updates. Updates arrive when we add a new version and you install it yourself.
- Author support. The developer’s helpdesk is for their own customers. Moryvanta support can help with downloading and installing.
- Cloud and API features. Anything that runs on the author’s servers, such as remote template libraries, AI credits, licence-gated add-ons or real-time threat feeds, may not work.
We list known limitations on every product page, so you can check before you buy.
When a GPL copy is the smart choice
- Testing before you commit. Try a premium plugin on a staging site before paying for an annual licence.
- Client builds and prototypes. Use premium features across many projects without buying a licence for each one.
- Features that run locally. Page builders, sliders, form builders, WooCommerce extensions and many SEO and performance tools work fully without the author’s servers.
When to buy from the author instead
If a product’s main value depends on the developer’s cloud, for example a security service with live firewall rules or a template library that downloads designs on demand, or if you need guaranteed support and instant updates on a business-critical site, an official licence is the better investment. Many teams use both: GPL copies for testing and smaller builds, official licences for their most important sites.
Five tips for using GPL products safely
- Download only from a source you trust, and avoid files that have been “nulled” or modified.
- Test on staging first, especially for plugins that touch checkout, security or caching.
- Back up before every update. A backup plugin or your host’s snapshots will do.
- Keep versions current by checking your account for new releases and reading the changelog.
- Dismiss activation notices, don’t hack them. Never install tools that claim to bypass licences.
The bottom line
The GPL is what makes affordable premium WordPress software possible. As long as you know which features run on your site and which depend on the author, a GPL copy can save you a lot of money on every project you build.
